Words: Traditional Spiritual

There is a balm in Gilead
To make the wounded whole;
There is a balm in Gilead
To heal the sin sick soul.

Sometimes I feel discouraged,
And think my work’s in vain,
But then the Holy Spirit
Revives my soul again.

There is a balm in Gilead
To make the wounded whole;
There is a balm in Gilead
To heal the sin sick soul.

If you cannot preach like Peter,
If you cannot pray like Paul,
You can tell the love of Jesus,
And say He died for all.

There is a balm in Gilead
To make the wounded whole;
There is a balm in Gilead
To heal the sin sick soul.

    I have loved this old spiritual since I was a little girl. I am listening to There is a Balm in Gilead and remembering my mother. Like so many of us can attest, she was the strength in the family when it came to our spiritual beings. She spent weeks ginding the sheet music to this song for me so that out “young peoples group” could learn it. This was in the early/mid 60’s and we did love to sing with each other and harmonize. Just after midnight tonight will be 2 years since she went to be with the Lord and escaped her painfully frail tiny little body. He took her home on Mother’s Day. The best gift she could have received. Thank you so much for sharing not just beautiful music, but beautiful memories with us. I just don’t believe the contemporary praise music will evoke these beautiful memories. I hope I am wrong.
